Jersey Devil | Cryptid 5e Monster

The infamous and legendary Jersey Devil is a tale that is spread across the arid regions of the world unlike any other.

Said to the 13th child of a family of fiend-worshippers, the offspring of this particular family came out grotesque and malformed. It had the legs of a goat, the wings of a dragon, the frail arms of a person, and the head of a goatish devil. The 13th child was said to rip its mother's stomach open before spreading its wings and echoing a bone-chilling scream before flying out of the home and into the cold air of night.

Since then, the Jersey Devil has been reported to be seen on numerous occasions, but no true evidence of such a creature has been found yet. Some of these claims have noted that the Jersey Devil appears to them on the eve of important events that change their lives for the negative, such as the killing of a king, the loss of a loved one, or a sudden war. Most notably however, the Jersey seems still intrinsically linked to that fabled number 13.

It is said to appear on children's 13th birthday, and tries to kill them as the clock strikes midnight. If 13 cattle are present, the Jersey Devil is said to appear and cull all of them in the most gruesome fashion. The Jersey Devil is said to use all manner of its natural weaponry in a fight, from its horrid bite to whipping tail that is whispered to imbue creatures with a strong poison. Its famous screech, the same that is said to have been heard when it was born, is mentioned to be enough to scramble the brains of creatures with fear to the point of death.

The Jersey Devil may or may not be real, but the myth of such a creature is rarely so infamous and well-known without a hint of truth...

Flyby. The devil doesn't provoke opportunity attacks when it flies out of an enemy's reach.

Thirteenth Child. The devil scores a critical hit on a 13 or 20. A roll of 13 against the devil is also considered to be a critical failure.

Actions

Multiattack. The devil makes one attack with its Bite, one with its Hooves, and one with its Forked Tail.

Bite. Melee Weapon Attack: +7 to hit, reach 5ft., one target. Hit 11 (2d6 + 4) piercing damage.

Hooves. Melee Weapon Attack: +7 to hit, reach 10ft., one target. Hit 9 (1d10 + 4) bludgeoning damage.

Forked Tail. Melee Weapon Attack: +7 hit hit, reach 10ft., one target. Hit 7 (1d6 + 4) piercing damage plus a bonus 10 (3d6) poison damage, and the creature must succeed on a DC 14 Constitution saving throw or be poisoned until the end of their next turn.

Scream of the Hells (Recharge 5-6). The devil emits a blood-curdling scream in a 60-foot radius. All creatures in the radius that are able to hear the devil must make a DC 15 Wisdom saving throw, taking 28 (8d6) psychic damage and falling prone on a failed save, or half as much and not falling prone on a success one. While a creature is prone in this way, it is also considered paralyzed.
